At this day, which is also known as the Sang Hyang Ayu or Sang Hyang Nirmala Jati cleansing day, the Balinese Hindus in Tanah Lot pray for protection of the household and the entire world including all creatures that inhabit it. The ceremony is performed at the kumulan shrine of the family temple and the plankiran (wall temple) of the bedroom. After finishing this ceremony one prays for protection of the household and the world with all its creatures in order to obtain an long and healthy life. After the prayers a final ceremony called metirtha gocara is performed with canang offerings and wangi-wangian, sweet smelling incense and flowers at the sangga of the family temple and the plankiran (wall temple) of the bedroom.

Pagerwesi in Tanah Lot : A Message to Stay Aware PDF Print E-mail

Active ImageToday, Wednesday, Balinese in Tanah Lot celebrate a special holiday, Pagerwesi. The Pagerwesi occur every 210 days on Wednesday Kliwon Sinta (the first Wednesday in Balinese Pawukon calendar). The Pagerwesi mark the beginning of Balinese Pawukon cycle with important message to stay aware and surround oneself with a strong fortification against the forces of evil all the year to come, these pledges clearly stated in the meaning of the word Pagerwesi. The word pager means fence and the word wesi means iron, on this day Balinese in Tanah Lot  have to erect a strong fence against all evil forces.

The celebration of Pagerwesi is based on the ancient scripture, Sundarigama, which stated that Budha Kliwon Shinta Ngaran Pagerwesi payogan Sang Hyang Pramesti Guru kairing ring watek Dewata Nawa Sanga ngawerdhiaken sarwa tumitah sarwatumuwuh ring bhuana kabeh, means Wednesday Kliwon Shinta is known as Pagerwesi, when Sanghyang Pramesti Guru (God as Supreme Teacher) with Dewata Nawa Sanga (Gods that protect nine directions) meditate for the welfare of all being in the world.

On this day, Balinese in Tanah Lot make and present special offerings to the Sanghyang Pramesti Guru (God as Supreme Teacher) as a sign of gratitude to the God as Supreme teacher and the gods of nine direction for their meditation. Another offering is also presented to the holy spirit of each family’s ancestors, a ceremony and prayers are held at respective family temple as well as at village temples throughout the island. All members of the family also make a visit to their deceased family member that have not been cremated in the cemetery.

Religious Day: Sabuh Mas in Tanah Lot PDF Print E-mail

 Today is one day consecrated by the Hindus. Because today, Tuesday or Anggara Wage Wuku Shinta is Sabuh mas holidays. On this day Hindus worship Mahadeva (the manifestation of God) to bestow his blessings on the king berana like precious metals, (gold, silver), property, jewels, beads and so on. "Sabuh" means belt, and "Mas" mean gold. On this day, Balinese bring offerings to the deposit box or the place where they keep their jewelry.

They thank Mahadewa (manifestation of God) for cloth, money, gold, etc in our lives. This celebration remind them to be selective when spending money. The philosophy of Sabuh Mas day is the fourth most important thing for human life is cloth and gold, etc.

Sabuh mas day comes once every 210 days. Sabuh Mas day is a series of Sarasawati day, where the day before the day Soma Ribek which also is a series of Saraswati day. Soma Ribek day, a special day of prayer for better life by giving offerings to every source of living like water, fire, rice, money, etc.

 Yesterday, on Sunday February 28, 2010 is Banyu Pinaruh holidays. Banyu Pinaruh is a series of Saraswati day is celebrated by Hindus a day after the day of Saraswati. Where is the Saraswati Day is celebrated the day before or on Saturday Umanis Wuku Watugunung. This Banyu Pinaruh holiday is celebrated every 210 days, every six months in Balinese Pawukon Calendar and every seven-month on the Gregorian calendar. Banyu Pinaruh is a holiday in which Balinese celebrate the coming of the knowledge to the world. The word "Banyu Pinaruh" itself is derived from the word "Banyu" means "water" or "holy water" and "pinaruh" or "pinaweruh" means "knowledge" so Banyu Pinaruh can be translated into "holy water of knowledge". Balinese believe, the goddess of knowledge, Saraswati bestow knowledge to the Humankind on this holiday.

Banyu Pinaruh is one of Balinese culture procession which is aim to clean the body and soul from ugly influence. This celebration is conducted Hindu resident in Bali in particular at the morning time. This celebration is common executed at the beach, lake or river. According to Balinese belief, by taking a bath which is more known by Banyu Pinaruh will be able to refresh the body and eliminate the sultry feeling from the routine activity. On this holiday, Balinese get up early in the morning to take a bath on the beach, lake, river or other holy water sources. Many Balinese offer small offering of flower in container made of young coconut leave to the God before taking the ritual bath. This ritual bath serves to purify the mind and body so they become good containers for knowledge that bestowed on this holiday.
