Banana (”biu” in Balinese) in Balinese life is a non-substitutable part, that have merged into the Balinese daily life and become a necessity whether for ceremonial purpose or secular one. Banana in Bali is usually grown on the backyard of the house or crowded the backyard, as a matter of fact.
English maybe satisfied with a general word “banana” for all species banana but Balinese prefer to do something in complicated way, and with Banana, Balinese language coins a word for each species of Banana. There is red one, called biu udang, meaning ”shrimp banana.” There are delicious tiny ones, no longer than the length of your finger, called milk bananas, biu susu. Biu kate plants are dwarfs but the fruit is normal size. Biu gadang is still quite green when ripe and ready to eat. Biu mas is of a deep golden color. Biu kayu is long and skinny. Biu dak sangket resembles a hook. Biu raja, king banana is as big as banana that are sell in supermarket or maybe it is. |

The Upacara Mabyakala, also referred to as Mabyakaonan, is a cleansing ceremony that belongs to all Yadnya categories. It may be performed as the first of a series of ceremonies during a Bhuta Yadnya, Manusa Yadnya, Pitra Yadnya or Dewa Yadnya ceremony. The Mabyakala ceremony (upacara) is an excorcism rite intended to cleanse the physical content of a specific space (like temples, land or house compounds, and/or the people c.q. animals who live in that space) from the negative aspects and influences of non-physical content of that space, generally referred to as bhutakala.
In case of a Manusa Yadnya (ceremonies for people) this ceremony is usually performed at the house in front of the door, or at the Kamulan Rong Tinga shrine of the family temple of the house compound. The Mabyakala offerings (upakara) are generally referred to as banten byakaonan. |

The meaning of Melasti ceremony is a process of nature and human cleansing, which is done by discarding all dirties with life water. Thus, the procession is done at water resources. It is done as late as before evening. The procession was started with Jempana convoy and offerings, which were put to the edge beach, which the people walked up to the water. The offerings were then put on to the prepared table. In front of Hinduism followers, Ida Begawan, which was accompanied by "wasi" and "sutri", led the praying by reading words, while the followers followed it silently. |
