Family Temple in Tanah Lot PDF Print E-mail

Active ImageNowadays, more and more Tanah Lot people have their family temple on the second or third floor of their houses. This phenomenon can be traced back to early 1980s especially in the urban areas. Although there is no religious scripture can be used as reference but to build the family temple on the highest floor in the building is considered properly based on Tri Anga and Tri Mandala concept.

Based on these concepts the placement of the family temple on the top floor is justifiable due to the limitation of available land. From Tri Mandala point of view, the placement of the family temple in the main position which is on the top floor is justifiable. From Tri Angga point of view, topmost floor is considered as the “head” that is suitable for the place to glorify God, deities, and ancestors.

In urban area where land limitation becomes main problem and family temple and other buildings can not be placed horizontally, the the only resort is to build vertically and put the family temple on the topmost floor. But it is also warned that the floor right below the family temple is not used for unholy purpose such as toilet in order to maintain the holiness of the family temple on the upper floor; it is advisable to use this place as a library or place to keep religious and ceremonial implements; using it as place for business or garage is also appropriate.

Hinduism is flexible, especially in the implementation of Hita Karana concept. In the case of Parahyangan (the relation between man and God), the holy building can be placed on the topmost floor when limited space becomes a hindrance to place the holy building directly touched earth.
