Ceremony on Padma Temple at Tanah Lot PDF Print E-mail
melaspas4Today, will performed temple ceremony at Padmasana and Tugu Penunggun Karang Temple Tanah Lot. Padmasana and Penunggun Karang Temple, translated literally into “shrine for house compound”. The shrine usually a roofless shrine but in tanah lot area it is roofed with one compartment, situated in the northwest corner of the parking area. The spirit in this shrine acts as a guardian that watches not only the property but also the inhabitants of all side in tanah lot including the animals.

This shrine is dedicated to Kala Raksa, or Bhatara Kala – the god of the evil spirits. Tanah Lot society believe that when they employ the god of the evil spirit as a guardian, logically, no evil spirit will dare to disturb its inhabitants. As any other thing in tanah lot society, there is no uniformity in the name and function of this shrine. Some of them say it is dedicated to Bhatara Surya, the sun. Others claim it has a connection with the kanda pat – the four spiritual siblings of every hindus peoples. This shrine is sometimes described as being for the family.
The word “family” here can be either the physical family that lives within the walls of house compound or for the kanda pat – mystical family that lives in the mystical realm. Religious ceremony was taked place on evening about 7 PM. All staff from operational management of Tanah Lot and all merchant will do pray. Most woman brought some offerings to devote to the God. The offerings consist of canang sari, punjung with various fruits, and kwangen as medium to pray.

Praying was started with puja tri sandhya and continue with muspa. First, prayer pray with empty hand called "puyung". After that continued with use some flower with red and white color called "muspa", and then use kwangen which consist of some flower with multivarious color, and there is money above the flower called "sesari". Pray with kwangen is part of muspa. The last is pray with empty hand again to say thanks to the God of fluency and amenity which have been given.


After done, then continued with nunas tirtha or holy water and bija or holy seed from the priest. Holy water and holy seed as symbol of award from the God to the hindus people. The holy water will spattered on counted four times to prayer. The first until third, holy water is drinked by prayer as symbol as cleaning the soul. But the fourth one is wash to the face as symbol as cleaning body. Last, nunas holy seed and put the holy seed at three piece of eyebrow, at neck and the last one at above of head.
